Humanities

Koan is not new to Austin Waldorf. In fact, they have lent their talents as a HS Humanities tutor as well as a Grade 4 English Language Learner Tutor this last year. They graduated from Columbia University with a BA and MFA in Poetry and have worked as a teacher and professor since 2017. Koan arrived at Austin Waldorf from The School of Art and Center for Writing at the Cooper Union in New York City. They are an avid user of Austin’s swimming holes and are a lay ordained Soto Zen student. Soto Zen Buddhism is distinguished by its focus on the down-to-earth practice of “everyday Zen”. It encourages awareness of the workings of one’s own mind as a means of living mindfully in all areas of daily life—at home, at work and in the community.

“I especially love the activities like gardening and handwork. I believe these skills are important in cognitive development. Many schools today are mandated to focus on academic achievement and testing while forgetting the building blocks of learning to think for ourselves and to be creative. ”
