During the 2017-2018 school year, Mr. Roy’s 8th-grade class decided to honor their class teacher by raising funds to support the Cambodia school, the House of Joy and Happiness. Approximately $4,000 are needed each year to fund an English and Computer teacher and to provide internet service for this remote, rural school. Mr. Roy’s first 8th grade class in 2007 had raised funds to start the school and this year’s class wanted to further the school as much as possible. The students kept the fundraising a secret from Mr. Roy.

As one of the activities for fundraising, the class planned a car wash and bake sale. Signs were made, secret emails sent, soap purchased, buckets gathered and finally on Memorial Day the big event took place.

Many of the children worked all day from 9 am until 3 pm in the heat to wash cars. And when I say wash I mean, vacuum the whole inside, wash the outside, dry the outside, provide a tire treatment and window treatment. This was no average car wash.

In just over 5 hours the students managed to wash over 40 cars! They averaged completing a car every 8 minutes. It was amazing to see.

After a grueling but fun-filled day, the class raised almost $2400 which was given to Mr. Roy at the 8th-grade graduation along with the other funds that had been raised throughout the year. The class surpassed their fundraising goals and were able to support the English and Computer teacher and internet service for the school for a year.

Thanks to all who participated, including many of the parents, siblings, and even a few secret administrators in the office who helped us spread the word.

“It's comforting to know that our children are spending their days in a community that supports and seeks to know them individually. Not only do our children feel connected to their teachers, but my husband and I do as well.”
