Carol Jean Lewis-Zavala

Spanish

Carol Jean Lewis-Zavala spent her early life in several Central American countries and in Mexico.  For her undergraduate studies she attended Wheaton College in Illinois and spent summers at La Sorbonne in Paris and at the University of the Americas working toward a BA in Spanish and French.  She later enrolled at University of Texas Austin and completed her teacher certification, an MA and the PhD requirements (except for dissertation) in bilingual education.

She and her husband Juan have two daughters who both graduated from the Austin Waldorf School, Pele from the lower grades and Arielle from the high school.  Their granddaughter Alaina Cook graduated from eighth grade at Austin Waldorf as well.

Carol Jean has taught English as a Second Language, tutored extensively, has substituted at all levels at Austin Waldorf and has been the handwork and third grade teachers assistant.

Throughout her association with the Austin Waldorf community since 1986, hundreds of her handmade dolls and toys have become part of Waldorf student’s lives.  She enjoys painting, crocheting, reading, participating in Spacial Dynamics and spending time with her family, friends and colleagues.

“I appreciate that my grandchildren think here, that it is a warm and welcoming atmosphere, and that each child is honored for who they are.”
