Spring 2018 was an exciting time for the Roadrunners. We are proud to share how our various teams did this spring at the middle school level- AIPL (Austin Inter-Parochial League) and high school level- TAPPS (Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools).

The Highlights

There were 20 middle school track athletes competing this year; 7th and 8th grade boys finished 2nd overall in the AIPL championship meet for our category.

High school track athletes qualified for the State Meet finishing 4th in the long jump (Anna Miletich) and 6th in the 4×200 relay event (only one second from 3rd place).

There were more AWS tennis athletes this year than ever, thirteen between the middle school and high school. Brothers Connor and Justin Horton finished 2nd in the State Tournament, an all-time achievement for AWS.

There were six players on the high school golf team this year and two of them competed in the State Championship. Zachary Honigblum finished 4th in our division at State.

Track

This spring, Gerald Smith and Marissa Flournoy coached our middle school and high school track teams. We sincerely appreciate the dedication and time they offered to our student athletes.

In early May, four Austin Waldorf High School student-athletes, joined 1,500 athletes from the state of Texas at the TAPPS State Track and Field Championships in Waco, TX. In order to qualify for State, the students had to first compete at the district and regional levels.

10 members of the high school track team competed at the TAPPS District Meet in San Antonio. In order to qualify for Regionals, the athletes had to place in the top 4 of every event. Four students qualified for the regional meet in two relays (4×100 and 4×200) and two field events (high jump and long jump).

The TAPPS Regional Meet took place in Houston. Again, the top 4 finishers in each event would qualify for the next competition, State. Congratulations to Anna Miletich for finishing 2nd in the long jump! The 4×200 relay team (Anna Miletich, Sarah Janicki, Lauren Tourish, and Risa Olson) improved their time by a full ten seconds to secure their 3rd place finish.

At the State Meet in the 2A division Anna was 4th in long jump and our relay team finished 6th (within 1 second of 3rd place).

Twenty students participated on the middle school track team. They competed in three different big meets (15-20 schools at each one) finishing with the AIPL Championship Meet. Virtually everyone who competed finished in the top 8 of at least one event, which meant they scored points for the team. At the end of the meet the 7th and 8th grade boys team finished 2nd overall in the small school division!

Tennis

This year was a big one for Austin Waldorf School tennis. Both the middle school and high school teams had more players than any other tennis team in AWS history. The Austin Waldorf School had 6 middle school tennis players compete in the AIPL tennis tournament on May 5 in Dripping Springs.

Under the guidance of coaches Kevin Clark and Brett Powers, 7 players competed in the TAPPS Regional Tournament in Kerrville. All the players did well and we had 3 players qualify for the TAPPS 2A State Tennis Championships: Deniz Colak, Connor Horton, and Justin Horton.
At the State Tournament in Waco, the Horton brothers made school history by becoming the first AWS tennis players to win 3 matches in the State Tournament and finish 2nd overall in TAPPS 2A.

Golf

The high school golf team, led by Coach Jason Long, had 6 players compete in the TAPPS Regional Golf Tournament in Victoria. Zachary Honigblum finished 3rd of 60 golfers and Goodwin Bell made a dramatic 15-foot birdie putt on the 2nd playoff hole to qualify for the TAPPS 2A State Golf Championships. At the State tournament in Waco, Zachary finished 4th overall among TAPPS 2A golfers.

Congratulations to all of our student athletes! We admire your determination and commitment. Go Roadrunners!

“I appreciate the wonderful education that the Austin Waldorf School has given my granddaughter. She is a poised, confident young lady, ready to go forward to the next step of her education.”
