Team members:

Seniors: Ben Callahan, John Callahan, Yuseph Ali; Juniors: Aidan Cormier and Goodwin Bell; and Freshman: Zachary Honigblum just finished a short but sweet golf season with their best ever team finish at the TAPPS 2A State Championship in Waco, TX on April 18th and 19th.

The dust had barely settled from a rousing Basketball State Championship back-to-back win, in which four of our golfers contributed, when the golf team assembled and were off and swinging. Several local, non-TAPPS tournaments provided players with essential preparation for memorable wins at upcoming TAPPS tournaments.

Regent’s Tournament (March 27th) at Grey Rock Golf Course – Zachary and Yuseph held down the fort for the team while some players were out of town for high school Work Experience and college visits. Zachery placed 7th (79) out of 100+ players, many of whom were players from much larger schools, while Yuseph took on his first round of competitive golf with notable determination, enjoyment, and success!

Ambleside Invitational (April 3rd) at Lady Bird Johnson Golf Course – A full 5-man team competed on a beautiful day in Fredericksburg and surprised themselves with a 2nd place win out of six teams. Zachary improved his Medalist standing from the prior week’s 7th place at Grey Rock to a well-earned 2nd place (77) Medalist standing.

Ready for the TAPPS 2A Regional Tournament? You bet! The team brought home the gold from this tournament played April 10th at the Victoria Country Club. Our top four players (Zachary, Aidan, John, and Ben), whose combined scores counted as the total AWS team score (366), easily put the Roadrunners in the winner’s circle with a huge 49 stroke team lead and giving AWS the first back-to-back Regional win! Goodwin was only four strokes shy of being counted as a top-4 player while Yuseph charged-on and lowered his personal best competitive round. In addition to this noteworthy team win, Zachary ended the day clearly at the top of the leader board with a five stroke lead (76) and an impressive, first ever, top Medalist win for an AWS freshman at the Regional level.

Golfers love historic lows, and that’s exactly what the Roadrunners shot last week at the two-day TAPPS 2A State Championship. While the team has placed in the top four in previous years (3rd – 2014, 4th – 2015, 3rd – 2016), they were never close to the winning team – averaging 50+ strokes more. This year was different – the gap was closed! At the end of the first day, the Roadrunners sat in second place with only eight strokes separating them from the leading team, Lubbock All Saints (our opponent in this year’s State Final Basketball game!). “Drop those scores” was the mission for the second day, and that is exactly what the Roadrunners did. Zachary shaved off three (79-76); Aidan shaved off five (101-96); John stayed steady (91-92); and Ben went for broke by shaving off an incredible fifteen strokes (100-85) along with logging an historic personal low. All that shaving brought AWS to their first 2nd place State win – just a mere four strokes behind the leading team, Lubbock All Saints. Zachary’s terrific 4+ (76) round helped him to a tie for third place Medalist. This third place tie is the highest standing achieved by a freshman AWS golfer.

CONGRATULATIONS ROADRUNNERS!
